Examining “the other face of women in total institutions” leads to an in-depth investigation into the inclusion of women in the prison police force. The present research work that focuses mainly on the officers performing their duties in the women’s sections of prisons in Emilia-Romagna and Marche. In particular, the empirical focus of the research is oriented to consider the training paths prior to employment in prison and the relational dynamics with female prisoners. From a methodological point of view, a semi-structured interview was developed and submitted to 24 female prison police workers, serving in the female sections of institutions in Emilia-Romagna and Marche. As for the specific institutes, all those with a female section were involved in the project: Bologna, Modena, Forlì, Reggio Emilia, Piacenza and Pesaro.
