The tendency to validate political disinformation is often linked to how news is conveyed and consumed online, particularly compared to other media outlets. However, this may primarily affect those who choose to self-expose to online partisan news sources. This paper addresses this research question by comparing the impact of online partisan self-exposure with that of legacy media outlets. Additionally, it introduces a gender perspective by examining whether there is a gender gap in susceptibility to political disinformation and how much of this gap is attributable to methodological biases. The analysis, based on representative data collected during the 2018 Italian general elections, reveals that online partisan self-exposure actually aids in detecting political disinformation, while partisan self-exposure to TV channels has the opposite effect. Regarding the gender gap, the results indicate that women are no more susceptible to political disinformation than men when the false news story pertains to political topics and targets with which women are more familiar
