The increase in national and international student mobility has led, since the end of the 20th century, to a considerable increase in the demand for accommodation in the member countries of the European Union. With the aim of responding to this demand with an adequate supply of accommodation, many countries have undertaken policies aimed at building university accommodation and residences, through policies involving public and private entities. In Italy, Law no. 338/00 constitutes a first example of an organic multi-year program specifically dedicated to State co-financing for measures aimed at upgrading existing accommodation and increasing the number of accommodation places for university students. New public intervention instruments linked to specific PNRR resources and investments have been introduced as of 2022. The contribution, through the analysis and structuring of the data collected with the monitoring activity of the co-financed interventions, in addition to reporting the state of the art twenty-five years after the enactment of the law, aims at assessing the results of the public intervention and the prospects for development
