This field note essay presents a descriptive account of a musician-researcher’s insider outsider experience within a Spanish rock music scene, drawing from observations gathered during two performance tours. Through immersive participation, the work documents the scene’s distinctive cultural patterns and social dynamics from a dual positionality in three sections. First, it describes the embodied practices and strategic identity work that musicians employ within subcultural spaces and social networks. Second, it portrays the bricolage of historical subcultural signifiers that coalesce into contemporary hybrid expressions, challenging linear narratives of subcultural evolution. Finally, it depicts the ritualistic dimensions of collective hedonism, discussing how shared transgressive performances constitute and reproduce subcultural boundaries whilst fostering affective communities. By presenting these experiences through both participant and observer perspectives, the essay aims to capture the lived reality of this music scene, illuminating its cultural practices, identity expressions, and transnational subcultural flows.
