In this essay, taking the famous novel Crime and Punishment as a point of reference, I will try to analyze in depth F. Dostoevsky’s idea that the guilty person, after all, desires that punishment which he apparently fears, in order to reintegrate with society. And it is precisely his revolting conscience that demands it, leaving two alternatives: to remain unpunished (in the case of a perfect crime) and tormented for life, split between outer man and inner man, deprived of a possible path to happiness; or suicide in the face of total loneliness, in which one ends up crushed by the weight of guilt even if one continued to live in society. I will call out on this theme especially Socrates, Seneca and L. Pareyson, but also other authors.
