This article analyses a particular type of early modern peasant commons on the territory of Lesser Poland (a region of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth): gromada pastures. Gromada pastures were organized, maintained, and managed by the local institution of the village community, the gromada. These common pastures were (usually) managed by wealthy peasants and used by poorer ones who were considered members of the community. The contribution uses an anthropological approach to identify social functions and trace how different groups of peasants used this type of common pasture. It allows us to see the gromada pasture as a political tool of wealthy peasants who sought to establish and maintain a village community. Thus, the article examines a type of peasant commons on the territory of early modern Poland that has so far been largely ignored. It traces the complexity of early modern villages through the study of the politics associated with this particular type of common pasture. In addition, it presents an alternative approach to the study of early modern commons to the neo-institutional one
