104The article examines the urban development of Palermo in the postwar period, highlighting the influence of the Mafia and politics. After World War II, the city’s reconstruction was marked by building speculation and Mafia infiltration, with urban planning decisions often driven by economic and political interests. The Christian Democracy, with figures like Salvo Lima and Vito Ciancimino, played a crucial role, overturning initial urban plans and favoring speculation. This period, known as the ‘sack of Palermo’, radically transformed the city, sacrificing public green spaces and historical heritage for disordered urban expansion. The article analyzes historical documents and direct testimonies to offer a critical view of these transformations, emphasizing how the combination of speculative and Mafia interests left lasting scars on Palermo’s urban fabric. Special attention is given to the role of urban planners, whose plans and projects were often ignored or manipulated to favor private and speculative interests.
