151This article analyzes the beginnings of knowledge production and exchange on urban retail in the Yugoslav architecture and urban planning community from the late 1950s to the early 1970s. Through an in-depth analysis of the work of Lidija Podbregar-Vasle, whose career was dedicated to the development of commercial urbanism, the article shows that Yugoslav architects and urban planners quickly became well acquainted with contemporary international trends in designing urban retail spaces. Through frequent transnational encounters and exchanges, the knowledge production and implementation in the field of commercial urbanism echoed widespread preoccupations with improving the physical and social life in cities in the period following the postwar reconstruction. I argue that Yugoslav architects and urban planners discussed and localized leading ideas on the new role of retail in cities in postwar societies as a part of a larger transnational effort to rebuild shattered communities and strengthen welfare systems through housing provisions and the creation of urban space as a public good. By focusing on written rather than visual or built architectural output, the article reads as a conceptual history of urban planning centered on topics like the neighborhood unit, humanized city centers, the civic role of retail spaces, and urban mobility. For this reason, it contributes to a gender-sensitive, transnational history of architecture, urban planning, and expertise in the common postwar European space defined by state intervention in the social and urban realms from the 1950s to 1970s.
