Christian base communities (CBCs), which arise in the post-Vatican II as part of the “catholic protestµ, appear as a “laboratoryµ where thousands of believers experience a new way to be church from below, they are also places where the choice of faith is combined with social and political commitment in left-wing organizations. The article, piecing together the origins of Italian CBCs, analyses some specific cases such as Isolotto, Oregina, Conversano and San Paolo. It describes the organization and the first phase of the national movement during the seventies, focusing on the main themes of reflection and commitment in the CBCs, which, even if greatly reduced, still live on to this day.
