This essay proposes a general framework for understanding the history of world Catholicism since the Second Vatican Council. Two questions run through the entire period. On the one hand, the implementation of the "Aggiornamento" gave rise to controversies that crossed with social and cultural developments since the crisis of the ’68s. On the other, globalisation had consequences for the Church, while Rome must manage the shift in Catholicism’s center of gravity from Europe to the global South. These two facts form the background to a story which can be divided into three phases. From 1965 to 1985, the first reception of the Council took place in a general context of contestation of the Roman magisterium and challenge to the values on which post-industrial societies are based. Under the pontificate of John Paul II (1965-1985), Rome attempted to impose a conservative stabilisation of the conciliar heritage. Since the beginning of the 21st century, the gap between the Roman magisterium and the evolution of modern society has deepened, and the crisis has become endemic.
