The article deals with the issue of accepting the ideas and suggestions of the Second Vatican Council in the complicated political conditions of the oppression of church life in Czechoslovakia in the second half of the 1960s. In spite of political repression, however, it was possible to incorporate liturgical reforms into the Church’s activity and to initiate discussion of new theological initiatives on the basis of ecumenical cooperation. The article also traces, in the context of the implementation of the conciliar initiatives, the dynamics of the relationship between church and state experienced in 1968 during the communist reform of the Prague Spring, when Dubček became the head of the Communist Party. This political liberation contributed to a deepening of theological and spiritual debates and contacts with the ecclesiastical milieu in the West. However, the phase of relatively free exchange of views between the Czech Church and churches in Western Europe ended with the intervention of the Warsaw Pact troops and the subsequent consolidation of the Communist regime in the 1970s.
