In the late 1960s, the Dutch Catholics made headlines. Whether it was with liturgical experiments or priests contesting the celibacy, the aftermath of Vatican II in the Western-European country did not go unnoticed. When Rome regained control over the Dutch church province by appointing bishops who were against these experiments, it established a rift inside the Dutch Catholic Church. At both sides, the late 1960s became subject to myth-making. In this article, a case study on the association for ecumenism, Sint-Willibrord Vereniging, between 1965 and 1970 will help to look beyond the widely-known key events. From this study emerge three developments that sketch the international context of the Dutch experimental period: the emergence of the Church from below, the transition to a conciliar church and the mediatisation of church events.
