The COVID-19 pandemic and the restrictions imposed by governments had adverse effects, especially on populations in disadvantaged socioeconomic conditions. Minors with foreign citizenship, for whom the school environment and the learning of the Italian language are essential pillars of integration, suffered significantly from the negative effects of lockdown. The pandemic also highlighted the role of the third sector in managing both old and new vulnerabilities, as well as the ability of volunteers to identify and address emerging needs by adapting their actions. This study investigates the support provided by the third sector to foreign students, particularly in virtual learning contexts, to address linguistic or digital gaps. The research employed an integrated quali-quantitative method. The results indicate that support measures focused on assisting foreign pupils in primary education. At higher levels of education, support extended to unaccompanied minors enrolled in lower secondary courses. The study urges for a public intervention aimed at strengthening the extra curricular system oriented to new bottom up and informal practices. In this perspective, education is seen as a common good, requiring greater involvement of the third sector in after-school activities to mitigate the adverse effects caused by the pandemic emergency.
