The essay compares the views of Giuseppe Mazzini and John Stuart Mill on liberty and liberalism. Some scholars argue that the similarities between the two thinkers are merely surface-level. However, a more in-depth exploration allows us to better assess their conceptions of liberty. By looking at Mill's thought as a whole , rather than focusing solely on liberty, we find that Mazzini and Mill both grapple with the same problem: how to balance liberalism and organicism, aiming to maintain individual freedom of conscience while fostering a cohesive set of common beliefs, often taking the form of a real religion, to bind society together.
