The essay traces the history of the last century since World War I to identify the different forms and protagonists of the wars that have passed through it – states, empires, superpowers, liberation movements, terrorisms –, and the different legitimations that these have advanced – humanity, justice, civilization, ideologies, religions, independence, economic and geopolitical interests. It will thus be possible to condense into a few formulas the permanencies and novelties, as well as the internal contradictions, of the relationship between war and politics that still mobilizes international relations despite attempts to rationalize it through moral and legal normativism.
