This analysis examines Nicole Loraux’s "Born of the Earth" (originally published in Paris, 1996), exploring Athenian conceptions of civic identity through their belief in autochthony – the idea of being «born from the earth». It investigates how myth, particularly when politicized, intertwines with ideology, shaping Athenian identity. Special attention is given to Euripides’ "Erechtheus" and its depiction of Praxithea, a mother who sacrificed her daughter to save Athens. This myth serves as a case study illustrating the dynamic interplay of politics, gender roles, and myth in Athenian thought.
