Without challenging Romagnosi’s acknowledged contribution to the definition of Europe as a civil and economic unity, or the main outline of his thoughts on that issue, a methodical review seems called for on the subject of interpretation: given, firstly, the sharp discontinuity and long periods of stagnation in the process of interpretation and, secondly, the need to continue to see the Italian Risorgimento from a European perspective, linked to a long-term vision. The review covers the chronological period between the beginning of the 20th century and the present day.
