98In this paper I offer a comparison between two texts of Aristotle: "Categories" 1-2 and "Metaphysics" Θ7. In both contexts Aristotle establishes a strong relationship between linguistic denomination and ontological predication. In the "Categories" Aristotle shows how the denominative distinction among homonymy, synonymy and paronymy confirms the ontological distinction between accidental and essential predicates. In the "Metaphysics" he shows how, once one acknowledges that matter does not signify the "thisness" of a substance but only its being made "of that", it is possible to distinguish the accidental predication from the essential one. My aim is to show how the two contexts offer a consistent account of Aristotle’s ontology, despite their methodological difference.
