124Even though "The Origin of Species" was published in 1859, discussions on evolution had already been influenced by the concept of «progress» for a long time. In mid-19th century England, the idea of showing the progressive representation of living species, from the simplest to the most complex, was not only limited to evolutionists. Some creationists, including several paleontologists, also supported this concept. Both groups tried to use the word «evolution», although they attributed slightly different meanings to it. However, both associated this idea with progress. Charles Lyell, a famous geologist and naturalist, carefully observed the intricate connections between these ideas. In his notebooks, he documented the debate on these issues and highlighted the many points of convergence between these various schools of thought. By reading his personal notes, we can better understand the historical debate on evolutionary ideas contemporary to Charles Darwin.
