Giorgio Manganelli, author of "La letteratura come menzogna", was naturally drawn to the concept of 'fake' in both literary and artistic domains. Some well known cultural spectacles of the 1980s – such as the unexpectedly popular tour of the 'Riace Bronzes' in 1981 or the 1988 Florence exhibition "Museo dei Musei", which showcased 'copies' – found in Manganelli a sharp and irreverent commentator, true to his style. Beyond the attributionist debates and their commercial implications, the notion of 'fake' also invites reflection on the even more elusive and paradoxical concept of 'truth.' Manganelli’s work, along with that of predecessors such as Leopardi, Poe, and Gide, serves as a powerful tool for deconstructing both.
