88Literature suggests that international students who have difficulty adjusting to a host culture tend to experience psychological distress. Based on acculturation theory and social identity theory, this study explored who was more vulnerable to the negative effect of maladjustment among international students by focusing on their ethnic identity, which consists of commitment and exploration. The results of data from 129 international students in Japan revealed that their ethnic identity moderated the link between sociocultural adjustment/loneliness and depressive symptoms in unique ways. Specifically, these students’ ethnic identity commitment strengthened the protective impact of sociocultural adjustment on depressive symptoms. However, ethnic identity exploration strengthened the destructive effect of loneliness on depressive symptoms. Theoretical and practical contributions are discussed.
