215Our contribution questions the emergence of the Alpine passage, at the border between France and Italy, as a crucial crossroads, a point of condensation of diverse migrant trajectories within Europe enabled by a specific composition of transnational solidarity networks or what we call a constellation of refuges. The article considers the Alpine passage to be the result of three main dimensions: the conformation and functioning of cross-border solidarity networks, in which local and transnational activists cooperate complementarily to interlink the French and the Italian side; the natural and infrastructural assemblage, where the morphology of the territory is intertwined with the stratification of diverse mobility infrastructures; the material forms of border control, which assume different configurations based on the contradictory practices of the French and Italian border guards, reflecting State interests in migration management. To investigate this complex social environment, we employed a methodology involving extensive field research along the Alpine crossroads, developing a multi-sited ethnography in the area of Oulx, Cesana, Claviere, Montgenèvre and Briançon.
