555Starting from 2024 a new reform of minimum income took place in Italy made by the right-wing Giorgia Meloni’s government. It aims to overcome the framework of the Citizenship Income that generated a large political debate bringing minimum income scheme to became one of the main issues in the Italian political debate. This article aims to contribute to the discussion on the topic by tracing how the relationship between labour and poverty policies has evolved in the framework of different minimum income schemes since their introduction, considering the time frame 2019-2023. It will not focus only on the political and social reasons that have led to the introduction of a minimum income, but especially on the different shape that, after its introduction, the schemes have taken. What role did conditionality and the workfare approach play in the intense five-year period that saw the introduction and various modifications of minimum income in Italy? And in particular, how central has the electoral competition and the reconfiguration of the political supply been in the evolution of these policies? The analysis shows how the workfare dimension, which has become central since the first discussion about Citizenship Income, guided the political debate in recent years as one of the main issues and was the origin of Meloni’s reform. But the focus on it only by a political and electoral point of view risks to leave the strong criticalities of Italian labour market in the background.
