211In modern times, artists defended a definition of the aesthetic value of works of art independent of political, economic, and moral pressures, while the church demanded them to be a song to the glory of God and the edification of mankind. In the 20th century, praise-writing slowly passed from the hands of clerics to those of the laity and Catholic writers obtained a patent of catholicity thanks to their works devoted to holy figures such as Jean-Marie Vianney. There are, however, risks involved in such practice: that of an orthodoxy suspicious of all fiction, especially as it can sometimes evoke contemporary debates, and that of producing a work that gain little consideration in the literary world.
