143The study of the associations between online communication and rising anti-migrant sentiments has for the most part adopted the Euro-American bloc and/or far-right movements as privileged spaces for inquiry. This tendency is rooted in concrete shifts in communicative practices and political debates, motivated by the increased presence of discursive forms associated with the far-right in online media and by the successes of nativist parties once relegated at the margins of electoral politics. It is also reflective, however, of imbalances in the production of academic knowledge, which not only leads to an over-representation of phenomena and dynamics occurring in the Global North, but also risks over-extending specific frameworks and patterns onto societies where the anti-migrant sentiments respond to different logics. By focusing on South African anti-migrant group Operation Dudula and on its use of the messaging service WhatsApp the article exposes and investigates a paradox that emerges when mediated expression of anti-migrant politics are analysed on a broader and comparative scale, which includes the majority-world. Operation Dudula’s constitutive stance – rallying black South Africans against other foreign black Africans – defies common explanations of discrimination based on skin colour, religion, or tradition. And yet, it appropriates the nativism that characterises most exclusionary movements globally, exposing some of the most basic triggers of politics based on othering.
