84Data journalists usually work in interdisciplinary teams of journalists, programmers and designers. This study examines the way in which German data teams work together. The results show that a different team culture prevails in these teams compared to more hierarchical traditional departments. Data teams are characterized by their own professional culture, which is also conditioned by software development’s organizational and technical structures. Due to their unique skills (data analysis, programming, design), data teams have a high degree of autonomy – at least in the selection of topics. At the same time, however, they are also more dependent than other editors on cooperation within and outside the media company due to their status as boundary spanners. Overall, the results show a data journalistic subculture within the editorial team. The use of clearly different organizational and technical structures starkly contrasts the practices of the rest of the journalistic department.
