47This article employs INVALSI data spanning the academic years 2009-10 to 2018/19 to analyse longitudinal trends in educational and migration-related seg-regation across the entire population of second-grade primary school students and third-grade lower secondary school students in all Italian schools. Segregation is measured at the individual school level using the dissimilarity index and the expo-sure index: the former compares the empirical distribution of students across schools to a theoretical scenario of equal distribution, while the latter quantifies the probability of students from one group sharing a school with those from anoth-er group. The findings reveal relatively moderate levels of segregation, stable in terms of parental educational background but exhibiting a slight upward trend for migration status. Overall, segregation is more pronounced in primary schools compared to lower secondary schools. Geographically, segregation is strongest in major metropolitan areas and Southern regions, though significant heterogeneity persists even within the same geographic zones. Temporal trends in segregation are attributable to demographic shifts among the analysed groups. Notably, the study identifies a significant increase over time in the segregation of foreign-born stu-dents (first-generation immigrants).
