This paper analyzes the impact of technological innovations and labor market reforms on productivity in the Italian textile sector, focusing on the cashmere knitwear industry. It examines how capital-oriented technologies and automation have driven productivity growth, while also considering the effects of labor market rigidities and labor accumulation. The research highlights Italy's productivity slowdown since 1995, despite recent labor reforms increasing labor supply. Capital positively contributed to productivity growth post-2000, but Total Factor Productivity (TFP) had a dampening effect. The study explores the relationship between productivity and the labor market's shift towards industrial innovation, demonstrating that capital-oriented technology and automation lead to significant market productivity increases, while labor supply shocks and market rigidities hinder long-term productivity and explain cyclical behavior. Then, the paper moves to the cashmere knitwear industry as a case study and introduces CUA, an innovative project for the cashmere knitwear industry, blending artisanal traditions with technological advancements, focusing on unique, personalized garments using circular economy principles and promoting craftsmanship. CUA aims to address the lack of industrial innovation support by training professionals in garment production and personalization, creating new jobs and promoting entrepreneurship in high-value garments, emphasizing circularity, uniqueness, and artisan craftsmanship throughout its sustainable production process.
