This study analyses a late 15th-century vernacular inscription in the «sala dei Saggi» of the fortress in Fabrica di Roma, a small village in the province of Viterbo. After having traced the text back to the literary source (an eclogue by the Ferrara poet Tebaldeo), a philological analysis was carried out through a comparison with the entire manuscript tradition. The linguistic analysis starts by isolating the original features of the inscription and the readings attributable to the manuscript tradition and printing of the text. The two features thus isolated ("scelente" and "sementare" instead of "excellente" and "seminare", found in the editio princeps) can therefore be traced back to the local linguistic variety, of which they represent an example of diachronous development.
