An analysis of a selection of early 17th-century letters sheds light on the rhetorical and pragmatic strategies through which the author, the Monferrato physician Andrea Trevigi, formulated a series of requests addressed to Vincenzo I and other members of Gonzaga family. In particular, the study highlights Trevigi’s adherence both to the codes of courtesy and the norms of epistolary grammar, which required specific formal precautions depending on whether the sender included the requests within unmarked letters, or whether the sender used the legal mechanism of the petition through codified administrative procedures.
