This paper describes the syntactic, semantic and pragmatic development of the Italian locution "niente niente" from its origins to the 20th century. To this end, data are collected from several diachronic corpora of Italian. This study has been undertaken due to the lack of comprehensive descriptions of the expression in dictionaries and grammars. The results show that the evolution of "niente niente" represents a case of both grammaticalisation and pragmaticalisation.
