This essay focuses on thresholds and boundaries in Italo Calvino’s "Invisible Cities" (1972) and reflects on the personal development and engagement they represent. The anthropological concept of liminality and Calvino’s reflections on beginning and ending in "Consistency" from "Six Memos for the Next Millennium" and other essays are used to illustrate "Invisible Cities" as a coming-of-age narrative in disguise. Through its catalogue of "confini" (borders, boundaries, limits) that mark identities and dare to be crossed, "Invisible Cities" emerges as a celebration of development as change, difference and new beginnings.
