87Ideational scholarship has distinguished different types of ideas, tracing their distinctive role in affecting policy change. The sub-category of political ideologies has however remained relatively neglected. This contribution shows that ideology studies have provided several insights for understanding the endogenous dynamics of intellectual constructs and the extent to which they can autonomously affect political behaviours. This strand of literature has illustrated how ideologies always combine ideas-as-representation and ideas-as-imagination and how the latter can play a key role in reconfiguring beliefs and activating the motivation to act. This analytical distinction can enhance the explanatory potential of ideational scholarship in general, in particular as regards feedback effects, institutional change and the agentive dynamics at the micro-level.
