Reflecting on what type of intellectual the figure of Brunetto Latini (c. 1220-1294) represented, the essay analyses his overall philosophical and political project. Looking at his main works, which intersect the different roles that Brunetto Latini performed while serving the Florentine administration – philosopher, "dettatore" (i.e., master of rhetoric), and poet – the article offers insights to interpret better the intellectual function he embodied in a way that was both original and paradigmatic.
