246The essay reconstructs and analyzes the political thought of John Cooke, Solicitor General in the trial against Charles I. After a brief biographical contextualization, the second paragraph focuses on "King Charles his Case" (1649). In this work on the one hand Cooke’s argument on monarchy is grounded on a series of doctrines and concepts that come from English medieval political and legal thought and the Calvinist tradition, especially Fortescue and Althusius, while, on the other hand, he moves forward from this tradition. This transition become clear in a later work, "Monarchy. No Creature of God’s Making" (1651). The third section is dedicated to this book where Cooke separates himself from Althusius on the one hand while, on the other, he can’t be associated with Hobbes’ modern perspective. Focusing on Cooke provides a fruitful opportunity to reflect on the interweaving of continuities and ruptures that marked XVII century in Europe and the long and complicated process of the genesis of political modernity.
