This essay analyses the anthropology of the "homo democraticus" as defined by Alexis de Tocqueville, with specific reference to the role played by passions in the development of political and social dynamics and of the relationship between democracy and freedom. The present analysis focuses on two of these passions: envy and resentment, which are recognised as distinctive characteristics of democratic citizens.
