283In this article, the author offers a re-examination of Max Horkheimer’s 1937 essay on the concept of Critical Theory and develops the hypothesis that, in order to fully grasp its philosophical and political implications, it is necessary to emphasise its continuity with earlier writings, and to some extent also with later ones, on the basis of at least four criteria: the interpretation of Modern theories of knowledge as a philosophical manifestation of the historical limits of the bourgeoisie as a ruling class; the use of the Kantian concept of 'schematism' as a metaphor for modern processes of socialisation; the view of the relationship between theory and the spontaneity of its addressees; the theory of monopoly capitalism and its socio-psychological consequences.
