86Since 2016, the research project Let Me Understand. Representations of Gender, Bodies, and Sexuality in Picture Books 0-18 Years is carrying out a monitoring of picture books for childhood and adolescence as a tool for gender and sexuality education. A reconnaissance of the Italian and international publishing scene; a bibliographic selection, constantly updated and free consultation, divided into seven sections, which is also an itinerant exhibition; and conversations in small groups. The recursiveness between these different actions allows feeding the very large sample of titles analyzed. Some recurring elements emerge more than others, in a tension between the dominant cisheteronormative model and the urges to diverge that the results allow us to intercept. Making this visible are the ways in which three macro themes such as ‘Motherhood and Reproduction’, ‘Growing Bodies’ and ‘The Representations of Identities’ are addressed in the texts and images of some of the project’s most representative books.
