In response to the target article, I discuss my experience with the climate of fear and (self-)censorship that has overtaken American academia with respect to gender dysphoria and transgender issues. A similar if milder climate developed in Italy and is just starting to dissipate; I illustrate this point with the lack of response by the Italian scientific community to a highly problematic letter on puberty blockers signed by 12 medical/scientific societies.
