The current ecological crisis and its associated challenges require social work to reflect on its role in the ecosocial transition of societies, particularly considering the significant impact of the ecological crisis on marginalised groups. Drawing on the broader debate about the crisis and reconfiguration of care, this article focuses on the adoption of an ecosocial approach in social work theorising and practice. To highlight the challenges of embedding the ecological dimension in social work, the article first presents some critical remarks on the ecosocial work debate. It then proposes a conceptualisation for a critical ecology of care, using a framework that recognises the interconnections between the ecological crisis and the crisis of care as an essential element in any consideration of an ecosocial reconfiguration of care work. In this sense, an ecosocial turn in social work offers an opportunity to reframe central dimensions that have been marginalised by the neoliberalisation of welfare, to draw connections between micro, meso and macro levels of social work practice, and to adopt an interdisciplinary and political approach.
