This article presents a critical review of the literature on student migration from southern to central and northern Italy, examining the selective dynamics that determine mobility, its systemic consequences, and its role in reproducing territorial and social inequalities. Based on sociological, economic, and demographic studies, the analysis highlights how student mobility is driven by a double divide: unequal starting conditions that favor students from upper-middle-class families with high levels of cultural capital; and persistent disparities in employment opportunities between Italian regions. What emerges is a mechanism of positive selection, whereby those who migrate are already advantaged from a socioeconomic point of view and better equipped to bear the material and symbolic costs of relocation. Student migration reflects and intensifies long-standing structural inequalities between the North and South: universities in the North and Center attract more and more talent and resources, while institutions in the South suffer a progressive loss of enrollment and financial resources. In this way, the attractiveness of northern universities becomes a key factor in attracting students. The paper also highlights the fundamental role of social networks and future job opportunities in determining the mobility choices of southern students. From this perspective, student migration emerges as a socially rooted and self-perpetuating process that links individual trajectories to historically uneven opportunity structures, reshaping the geography of tertiary education and work in contemporary Italy.
