In recent years, the widespread diffusion of dating apps has profoundly transformed how romantic relationships are initiated, raising questions about how we come to know others – at least in the early stages – through such platforms. This article examines how the cognitive and social mechanisms typical of face to-face encounters adapt to environments like Tinder, where crucial judgments about trustworthiness and compatibility must be made based on minimal cues, such as profile photos and short textual descriptions. Drawing on literature in social cognition, evolutionary psychology, and impression management, the paper explores the relationship between attractiveness and moral character, the bidirectional influence between aesthetic appearance and personality attributions, and the strategies users adopt to manage self-presentation and reduce uncertainty about others. Although opportunities for deception exist – partly due to the structural features of these digital spaces – users appear to navigate between idealization and authenticity, driven by the prospect of real-life encounters. Lastly, the article outlines future research directions to better understand how impression formation, management, and updating processes are reshaped in digital contexts compared to offline settings, with particular attention to emerging technologies, users’ risk-reduction strategies, and the ethical implications of self-presentation.
