501Positive aesthetic experiences, especially the pleasurable experience of beauty, undoubtedly play a key role in Kant’s aesthetic theory. However, Kantian scholars have also discussed whether his theory entails a concept of negative aesthetics. Can we find in Kant’s transcendental philosophy an aesthetic judgement on ugliness? Is there room for negative categories in an aesthetic based on harmony between the faculties? What is its relationship with the principle of purposiveness? These questions animated an intensive debate among Kantian scholars in the last twenty years. The question around negative aesthetic judgements thus becomes a peculiar gateway to the fundamental themes of Kant’s third "Critique" and questions the very foundation of aesthetic judgement: that is, the free play between imagination and understanding. Other themes central to aesthetic judgement are also challenged by the question around negative aesthetics, such as communicability, the principle of purposiveness, the relationship between pleasure and displeasure.
