In this article, I argue that – on Kant’s account – the feeling of the sublime relies on two different forms of self-affection of the inner sense: the first, due to the representational failure of the imagination, the second following from reason’s appeal to its practical function. The sublime is a multi-layered feeling that combines displeasure and pleasure in order to let the subject acknowledge practical reason’s primacy among the faculties and understand nature as a mirror of the human being’s moral vocation.
