219Within sociolinguistic research on multilingualism, a revitalisation of the concept ‘repertoire’ can be observed, expanding the notion of linguisitic or verbal repertoire to a broader concept described as communicative, semiotic or unitary repertoire. The resurgent use of the concept and its expansion are connected to shifts in conceptual understandings of multilingualism, based on the critique of ‘monolingual habitus’ and ‘monolingual bias’. With the notion of ‘superdiversity’, coined to describe the development toward increasingly pluralistic societies at the turn of the 20th to the 21st century, this process of reconceptualisation gained new impetus. Multilingualism can no longer be considered to be the exception from the monolingual norm, and the description of language use, resources, and multilingual competences cannot be reduced to qualifying language use against abstract standards of named languages. The article introduces the theoretical framework and the expansion of the repertoire to include the totality of resources people use in social interaction, highlighting its added value for research, as well as for increasingly pluralistic societies.
