143This article explores the complex and persistent nature of poverty in Taranto, a Southern Italian city undergoing a challenging post-industrial transition. Once a symbol of industrial modernity, Taranto now exemplifies the socioeconomic disintegration typical of shrinking cities. The study adopts a mixed-method approach that combines statistical analysis, ethnographic observation, and in-depth interviews with former recipients of the national minimum income scheme. Findings show that poverty in Taranto is structurally rooted in selective development policies, systemic gender and territorial inequalities, and an exclusionary transition agenda. Women’s unpaid care work and the erosion of intergenerational industrial identities are central to understanding how poverty is lived and reproduced. The paper underscores the need for more inclusive and place-based policy frameworks, capable of integrating local knowledge and lived experiences.
