Educational poverty is a social problem that has always existed but it is only recently that it has become the subject of in-depth public debate and scientific study and research. In fact, it was only in the 1990s that it began to appear in the sociological, economic and educational literature. Then it became increasingly visible thanks to governments, non-profit associations and some non-governmental organisations. Its complexity does not make it easy to provide a synthetic measure of it that can encompass all its various interrelated facets. However, the impossibility of monitoring and observing the phenomenon in its entirety does not prevent us from focusing on some of its elements which can enable all those involved, in a more or less direct way and at micro and macro levels, to get an idea of the nature and dimension of the problem, to identify solutions, and to act effectively. The aim of this article is to shed light on some dimensions of educational poverty in Italy, using indicators constructed from data collected by INVALSI in the framework of the annual national surveys. To answer these research questions, data from the 2021/22 INVALSI National Surveys have been used. Specifically, information from the cognitive tests in grades 8 and 13 will be analysed to monitor the dimension of students’ learning fragility, from the student questionnaire in grades 5, 8 and 13 for the dimension of students’ socio-economic and cultural disadvantage of origin, from the school questionnaire filled in by the headmasters of first and second cycle schools for the dimensions relating to the facilities and resources available at school, the involvement of parents, external bodies and professionals, and teachers’ motivation.
