47Essentially a logistical activity, timber floating required the construction of a large number of engineering structures along the waterways. These structures were perfected over time, particularly from the end of the eighteenth century, when volumes transported increased with the beginnings of European industrialization. Among these structures, the most specific to timber floating were the locks, which regulated the natural flow of water in various ways to facilitate the export of timber downstream. A comparative approach across several European regions will enable us to propose an initial typology based on both technical and usage criteria. We will examine the spread of one such structure across much of Central and Eastern Europe: the large lock known in German as the "Klause". Although their state of abandon and neglect (due to the end of the timber floating activity in the twentieth century) may often not suggest it, these hydraulic structures brought about major changes in river dynamics, both in the age of timber floating and in the present day.
