The paper aims at starting an inquiry into the transportation of timber and fire wood to Milan along the Lombard waterways, as well as into the effect this activity had on the territories it crossed and on some aspects of their social structure in the period from the mid-eighteenth century to the first decades of the nineteenth century. This is still a largely undefined subject. Hence the interest in these aspects, which on the one hand open up the possibility of interconnecting environmental history with economic and social history, and on the other hand, for the time being, remain limited to a partial perspective due to the lack of specific papers relating to wood. However, despite these uncertainties, it has been possible to proceed with a provisional sectorial reconstruction of the interconnections between the role of the institutions responsible for the control of forests and water ways, the speculative activity of the great merchant-capitalists of the wood sector, and the resulting social and environmental effects.
