The aim of this article is to propose a comparison between the philosophies of Thomas Aquinas and René Descartes with respect to the problems of "causa sui" and the "a priori" demonstration of the existence of God. Although moving from different perspectives, and relating differently to the instances of the "causa sui" and the "a priori" argument, Thomas and Descartes seem to agree on the nature of divine essence: Thomas, by denying the "causa sui" and the "a priori" demonstrability of divine existence, and Descartes, by affirming both, they aim at the individuation of divine transcendence with respect to creatures. The article concludes by showing how such transcendence makes it impossible to think of an onto-theo-logical articulation within the philosophies of Thomas and Descartes.
